Basic protective measures against the new coronavirus
Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:
Wash your hands frequently
Maintain social distancing
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
Practice respiratory hygiene
If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections

A more convenient, monthly treatment for HIV cleared a key hurdle
People living with HIV are one step closer to having a once-a-month treatment alternative to downing two or more pills a day.
There is no cure for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. But combination antiretroviral therapy, or ART, can effectively halt the replication of the virus, and prolonging life expectancy (). For the therapy to work, though, people must stick to a daily regimen of two or more pills, which experts say can be a challenge for many.

HIV reservoirs in humans: Immediate antiretroviral therapy makes them 100 times smaller
HIV hides in reservoirs during antiretroviral therapy (ART). These viral sanctuaries are the reason why ART is not a cure. And research teams have striven for years to determine how the HIV reservoirs are established and maintained during ART. Thanks to an unprecedented access to blood, and biopsies of rectums and lymph nodes of people at the earliest stages of HIV infection, an international team of researchers at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CRCHUM), the U.S. Military HIV Research Program and the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre has shown that the first established reservoirs are still "sensitive" during these early stages and could be downsized about 100 times upon immediate ART initiation.

1 March is…
Zero Discrimination Day
On Zero Discrimination Day this year, UNAIDS is challenging the discrimination faced by women and girls in all their diversity in order to raise awareness and mobilize action to promote equality and empowerment for women and girls.
Although some countries have made laudable progress towards greater gender equality, discrimination against women and girls still exists everywhere. Intersecting with other forms of discrimination—based, for example, on income, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity—these rights violations disproportionately harm women and girls. Ultimately, gender inequality affects everyone’s health and well-being. In many countries, laws that discriminate against women and girls remain in force, while laws that uphold women’s basic rights and protect them against harm and unequal treatment are far from the norm.

Scientists identify new human genes controlling HIV infection
Viruses are parasites. The only way they can grow is by hijacking their hosts. When they infect a human host, viruses use human proteins to multiply and modify the human cells to sustain the infection. At the same time, the human host activates defense mechanisms to fight the infection.
Most current drugs against viral infections target the virus itself. But scientists are interested in developing therapies that aim for host proteins instead, or the genes that produce them, in part because such therapies are believed less likely to elicit drug resistance. A detailed understanding of virus-host interactions is crucial to the success of this strategy.

Highly active HIV antibody restricts development of viral resistance
January 31, 2020
German Center for Infection Research
A research team has identified a new highly active antibody targeting HIV. Whereas the development of viral resistance limits the efficacy of previously described HIV antibodies, the newly identified antibody 1-18 can continuously suppress viral replication. 1-18 there-fore has high potential for successful application in the prevention and treatment of HIV infection

Mathematicians develop a model of the movement of immune cells
Credit: RUDN University
Mathematicians from RUDN University have developed a computational model that allows predicting the mobility of T-lymphocytes, immune cells that recognize and destroy viruses. The model will help in the treatment of immune system disorders, including those that can lead to cancer, and in the development of HIV vaccines. The study was published in Frontiers in Immunology.

CRISPR gene editing can create cells immune to HIV
Transplanted cells persist for 19 months in man with HIV but don't appear to control HIV when treatment stops
CRISPR gene editing was safe and moderately effective in introducing stem cells that lacked the CCR5 receptor and were immune to HIV infection after chemotherapy eradicated the immune system of a man with HIV and acute lymphocytic leukaemia, Chinese researchers report in this week.

Newly developed approach shows promise in silencing HIV infection
Researchers from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston have discovered a new potential medication that works with an HIV-infected person's own body to further suppress the ever present but silent virus that available HIV treatments are unable to combat.
Although the potential new drug could complement the current HIV anti-retroviral therapy (ART) medications, it may also be possible that it could lead to HIV remission without a lifetime of taking ART medications. The findings are published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
